VALUING FRESHWATER BEACHES AND BEACH CHARACTERISTICS:
THE CASE OF LAKE ERIE BEACHES IN OHIO

Beaches are an important recreational component of the Lake Erie shoreline. Unfortunately, most management agencies responsible for beaches currently have little information or knowledge regarding the economic value of these beaches. This makes decision-making more difficult, because it is more difficult to assess the relative merits of alternative management and policy decisions. Economic valuation efforts, such as this project, can help provide information critical to these decisions. Such information is particularly important for public goods like beaches (and associated open space), where price information is unavailable.
This research focuses on valuing freshwater beaches and beach characteristics in Ohio's portion of Lake Erie. The results are anticipated to provide estimates of values in freshwater beaches, which can be compared to values obtained in recent years for saltwater beaches.
Funding for this research has been obtained from The Ohio Sea Grant College Program, and the Lake Erie Protection Fund.
